Brief Description of Hale
The young Reverend Hale has come to Salem, Massachusetts because Parris has invited him to help with the Witch Hunt. He is believed to be very knowledgeable of such subject matters because he is straight out of one of the most prestigious colleges in the New England area, Harvard University. Hale arrives into Salem enthusiastically, thinking he will find a bright solution to the problem. However, upon his arrival, the scenario seems unnatural—at least in his opinion. His goal is to get to the bottom of this mystery: are there really witches in Salem? Hale comes to realize various acts of personal grudges in the accusation of witch craft. Eventually, he begins to doubt that there is a single act of witch craft in Salem. As a result, his character changes in the midst of the play. Hale goes from being a static but ambitious character to a dynamic character.
